Keep Your Ferret Healthy With the Proper Ferret Snacks
By Heather Sneed
In case you haven’t figured it out yet, ferrets absolutely love ferret snacks! However, if you are not careful, your ferret snacks will quickly become your ferret’s diets. That’s right. Ferrets are notorious fussy eaters. If you feed your ferret its favorite snack all the time, then you will wind up with a ferret that eats nothing but ferret snacks.
Ferret Snacks to Avoid:
As a consciences ferret owner and an owner that loves your ferret, you need to monitor your ferrets diet. As much as your ferret loves to eat Luck Charm’s marshmallows, they contain too much sugar for your sweet little ferret. Besides, isn’t your favorite too hyperactive as it is? Ferrets are prone to diabetes and they need a more meat based diet low in sugar. So avoid the sugar. (This means the ice cream cones too.)
While we are talking about food to avoid, let’s talk a little about soda. Your little ferret does not need caffeine no matter what he or she tells you. While they love the high-sugar and fully carbonated beverages, there is no need to give your already bouncing off the walls friends a taste. They may love the flavor and enjoy soda to no end but they don’t need it and it is best to avoid it altogether.
Ferret Snacks to Share:
Now, let’s get to the good stuff. If you really want to share a drink with your friend there are a few juices you can go with. Orange juice and grape juice are popular among ferrets. While they are high in sugar, they occur naturally in the real world. Ferrets would encounter grapes and oranges in nature so they can process the juice. However, you don’t want to give juice to your ferret too often. So keep the amounts to a minimum and your ferret will be fine.
A sugary ferret snack might include some fruits. Raisins, bananas, oranges, and other things of that sort will work.
Since they are high in sugar, you still need to limit the quantity of these snacks. Always remember your ferret needs a high protein low sugar diet to stay healthy and if he or she starts eating too many sweets, it won’t be healthy.
The best snacks for ferrets will be the high protein low sugar snacks. Plenty of commercial brand ferret snacks exist for purchase both online and in pet stores. They are easily accessible and when you shake the box, ferrets come running.
Nothing finds a hidden ferret like shaking a box of meaty ferret snacks. Other good sources of high protein snacks include eggs, frozen organs, dog treats, and cat treats.
Ferrets, like any animal, enjoy a good treat. It is your job as a responsible pet owner to make sure that the ferret snack is healthy and safe.
